Pen and Colour to Paper
As you might be seeing a bunch of sketches and artwork on my social media pages, I thought I should tell you the background to this ‘other’ side of me.
I did art right through high school, till I had the awkward decision to go to the creative or scientific side of life. In my last year of high school I decided to follow the scientific route and complete the three sciences (Biology, Chemistry, and Physics) and two math (Calculus and Statistics) for Bursary – yes for those that remember Bursary!
I dabbled in a little art here and there throughout my Uni days, but never had the space for such grand pieces that I loved to do. After flatting with a friend who is a very talented artist in Dunedin (example of her work Anna Smythe), she encouraged me to get the paints out again. And it started…..But then it dwindled once I started my final year of Uni, to then add an extra 2.5 y of ‘non-art creativity’ to complete my Masters.
Fast track to Invercargill and I finally had the space to get creative! And on grand scales again! It was fantastic to have my own house in which I had a whole studio room to have ‘Creative Katie’ time. But then again the art took a back seat as I started to get more involved in cycling, and moved up to Cambridge.
Recently during my stints overseas drawing was a great way to pass time in airports or to keep my mind busy during racing.
So why the big production of art pieces all of a sudden? A few weeks ago I was having a big clean out to sort my wardrobe. You know that time when you can’t shut the doors anymore?? Down the back was a box full of my art supplies…and dust! Having a look through some previous art work, even high school drawings and paintings I had kept, I got the itch to get back into it.
I made a few cards for friends birthdays, baby showers, etc. and loved getting the pens out. And with cycling kicking off with a trip to the States I wondered if my art work would be suitable to sell to help me get there. After putting up one sketch that I absolutely loved, I was very surprised in the response. And so it began, the series of ‘Pen and Colour to Paper’. The various art pieces have been developed through inspiration from friends, events, and the association with the other life I love – cycling!
So check out what I have created and throw in a few bids if you like what you see: K Schofield Fundraiser
